Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaker. Feminist Frequency is a site with video and an online blog on the representation of women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are represented in the pop culture. Aiming to dispel the myths of women that exist in pop media, she is also working to address issues relating to targeted harassment women and others online. Sarkeesian is a graduate in social thought and politics from York University. She is also an internationally acclaimed public speaker. Sarkeesian delivered speeches to the TEDxWomen XOXO Fest and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Inquiring about gender and feminism since the age of 7, she started her own website Feminist Frequency in 2009, while studying at the University. An ambitious woman who wanted to create a web series that examined the gender representation of video games was targeted in an online campaign. The attack wasn't enough to deter her. It actually increased her importance to being a feminist and a media critic. In recognition of the many achievements she's made for feministism, she's recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her work as a critic of media and also founded Feminist Frequency. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit organization that explores the portrayals of women in pop culture today.
